RIVER CLEAN UP – REMINDER

by | Dec 29, 2009 | Main | 2 comments

We are planning another  New Year’s Day clean up of rubbish from around the river downstream of Aveton Gifford for 2010.  The last couple of clean ups on NYD have proved a popular means of blowing away those party cobwebs.  LW will be around noon  so we shall gather at Timbers car park and Stakes Road for a 1100 start on this coming Friday.    Please come along and feel free to bring your friends.

The ACA can supply rubbish bags and lightweight plastic gloves, courtesy of SHDC, but if you have any strong bags and thick gloves you might prefer to use those.  Please come prepared to get muddy, wet and cold!  Tough, waterproof footwear is also advisable.

As in the past, we are hoping that SHDC will agree to pick up the assembled pile of full bags from both the Timbers and Stakes Road car parks as soon as possible after NYD.

If you prefer to use Bantham as a base, any bags for collection should be left at the top of the harbour slip road.  However, we shall be arranging a separate Cockleridge collection later in January as part of our  Marine Conservation Society’s ‘Adoptabeach’ collaboration.

With best wishes for a happy and environmentally prosperous New Year.

Thanks so much for letting Fred come along on your estuary cleanup. I have roots in your country oh so long ago,,,,,,,,and am happy to know of a connection with cleaning up our one ocean. When you have a chance, take a look at the kinds of plastic debris that lands on beaches here in the Pacific Northwest. I do daily beach cleanups and today hauled a lot of trash off that came from not too distant Seattle, Washington. I am trying to find ways to keep people from using plastic and promote PLASTIC FREE FRIDAYS. check out my Monkey Friend, Fred’s words about tht at http://soaronhirschi.blogspot.com. And, Thank you Maya for hosting Fred in England. I miss that little Monkey!!! Ron Hirschi, Marrowstone Island, Washington State, USA

Good to hear from you, Ron. As we all know, ‘plastics are forever’ and they are a global problem. What many people remain unaware of is that much of the damage to wildlife is done by tiny, even microscopic, buoyant pieces that are easily ingested e.g. the so-called ‘Mermaid’s Tears’. Unfortunately, they don’t have the same visual impact as old fish boxes, etc.

By the way, one of our local towns, Modbury, has made a big impression nationally by banning plastic bags.
