A full ecological assessment of the Avon Valley was last carried out in 1997 for South Hams District Council.   The assessment relies on analysis of aerial photographs which were followed up by surveys on the ground and it extends the results of a previous (1992) survey.  For the most part, the report  is a general classification of types of habitat and recommendations for their management  rather than a detailed description of the flora and fauna to be found in these habitats.    However, most of its general conclusions are as relevant today as they were 13 years ago.  Some of the recommendations have been carried out or are included for action in the management plans of the AONB and Estuary, respectively.  See the ECOLOGY page of this website for a copy of the report.
